Do you need more freezer space? Love clinking ice in your glass? Do you have seasonal hunting bounties or store large quantities of food? A standalone freezer or ice maker is just what you need.
All you have to do is decide on the type: a chest, upright, or column freezer or an undercounter, portable, or freestanding ice maker.
Freezers come in three basic capacity ranges: compact (5-9 cu. ft.), medium (12-18 cu. ft.), and large (18 cu. ft. and up). The size depends on which type of freezer you get.
Chest freezers store between 3.6 and 25 cu. ft of food, swing wide open, keep cooler during power outages, and feature removable hanging baskets and dividers. So, if you need to freeze larger quantities of food for parties, you’ll love the deep storage. Be sure to measure your space, as a 22-cu. ft. capacity needs a 2 x 6-foot area!
Upright freezers store between 4.7 and 24.7 cu. ft of food and feature a space-saving design, multiple shelves and door bins, a lighted interior, and either manual or self-defrost. Keep in mind that these run a little noisier and can be prone to freezer burn.
Column freezers basically expand on the benefits of an upright, but they are modular and need to be professionally installed. Fortunately, they can be installed practically anywhere. You can design the layout of your kitchen, den, or garage for the best flow! Plus, the variety of finishes add a dash of color to your aesthetic.
Love the luxury of ice-cold drinks all year long?
Undercounter ice makers stand between 25-35 inches tall, 12-18 inches wide, and 23-25 inches deep, and they fit flush with your countertop and cabinetry (the front panel is finished or left panel-ready). These require a water line and produce between 20-100 lbs. or more of ice over 24 hours, which is ideal if you’re always hosting cocktail parties.
Portable ice makers are roughly the size of a toaster or bread maker and can be placed on top of the counter. These require water to be added manually and produce between 10-30 lbs. of ice over 24 hours. This amount is good for hosting small gatherings or if you love cold drinks but don’t want to install an ice maker
Freestanding ice makers are about the same size as undercounter ice makers, except they fit anywhere with water line access. These also produce 20-100+ lbs. of ice over 24 hours and have either front or rear ventilation. So, if you hold lots of soirées but don’t want to sacrifice cabinet space, freestanding ice makers are perfect.
These features will keep your food frozen and drinks chilled.
